The trick is to find something to comment on, ask about, or share that goes beyond a simple greeting. Here are some effective strategies with examples ...

• Comment on the Situation or Environment

This is a fantastic way to break the ice because it's relevant to both you and the other person. Why does this work? It's natural, immediate, and shows you're observant.

At a coffee shop Wow, this coffee smells amazing! Have you tried their macchiato?

Waiting for a bus/train This line is quite long today, isn't it? Do you usually take this route?

At an event The speaker was really interesting, wasn't he? What did you think of his point about e-commerce?

The weather Beautiful day, isn't it? Perfect weather for going to the beach.

• Give Sincere Compliments

Sincere compliments instantly make someone feel good and open to talking.

Why does this work? It's positive and shows you've noticed something admirable about them.

Clothing I love your dress! It really suits you. Where did you buy it?

Work That was a fantastic presentation! I particularly enjoyed how you detailed each specific point you made.

Something they're doing You're doing a great job with that project. It looks really well-organized.

• Ask Open-Ended Questions

Instead of questions that are answered with a simple yes or no, ask questions that encourage a longer response and show your interest. Why does this work? It invites people to share more about themselves, which is a key part of connecting.

If you see them reading a book That looks like an interesting book. What's it about, and would you recommend it?

If they have a unique phone case Cool phone case! Are you a big fan of The Rolling Stones?

In a group setting, after a general topic has been mentioned What are your thoughts on that new restaurant that was mentioned?

If you're at a tourist attraction "Have you visited Italy before? What's your favorite part about it?

• Share a Relevant, Brief Personal Observation or Question

Sometimes, sharing a small piece of your own experience creates an opening for the other person to relate. Why does this work? It makes you seem relatable and approachable.

Struggling with something similar I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to use this app. Have you used it before?

Shared experiences I just finished reading that book, it was really thought-provoking. What did you make of the ending?

• Offer Help or Ask for a Small Favor

This instantly creates an interaction and a reason to talk. Make sure it's a genuine offer or a small, non-demanding request.  Why does this work? It establishes a brief, cooperative exchange.
