To say something that hasn't already been said is almost impossible, but I will attempt to frame existing observations in a way that highlights a less commonly emphasized facet, or connect them in a novel manner.

So, instead of a brand new revelation, let's explore this ...

The English language, in its current global dominance, is a self-modifying, self-propagating memetic organism, less a tool of human communication and more a living, evolving entity whose primary function is its own perpetuation and expansion, often at the expense of its internal consistency or the purity of its own historical lineage.

Let me break down why describing it this way offers a slightly different perspective ...

We often talk about English being a borrower of words, but the word borrowing implies a temporary acquisition.

What English does is more like opportunistic absorption. It doesn't just borrow words, it takes concepts, grammatical structures, and pronunciation patterns from other languages, digests them, and then renders the original language redundant or less prominent in its own domain. This is a fundamental restructuring of English's internal logic based on external stimuli.

In English, the concept of memes applies strongly. English words, phrases, and even grammatical quirks are incredibly sticky and replicable. Beyond individual memes, the entire language system functions as a hyper-successful meme.

The English language spreads not just because of its utility, but because of its inherent design for propagation. Its irregularities, its vast vocabulary, and its flexible syntax are precisely what allow it to adapt to almost any context and assimilate new ideas with remarkable speed.

We learn languages to communicate. English's global spread feels less like a conscious human choice and more like an unstoppable natural phenomenon. Economic, political, and cultural forces don't just use English, they are driven by its pervasive presence.

Its illogical spellings, its contradictory grammatical rules, its massive lexicon with numerous synonyms are not bugs, but features of an organism optimized for survival in a rapidly changing linguistic environment. It doesn't care about being pure or perfect, it cares about being effective in its spread.

The very fact that English is the de facto global standard in so many fields isn't a consequence of historical accident. It's an evolutionary advantage it has developed. Its adaptability allows it to become the default setting for new technologies, international agreements, and scientific discourse, further cementing its position and ensuring its continued proliferation.

So, while we sometimes discuss English in terms of its history, its grammar, its vocabulary, or its cultural impact, perhaps a less emphasized perspective is to view it as a highly successful, self-serving, memetic organism, whose chaotic vitality and opportunistic nature are the keys to its global dominance.

It's not just a language we speak, it's a language that is constantly redefining what it means to be a language, driven by its own inherent drive to expand and perpetuate itself.

A language like Latin is dead because it no longer has native speakers and is no longer undergoing natural evolution. English is a robust and actively evolving language, making it undeniably alive.
